History of Swabi
The name Swabi is believed by many to have been derived from "saabi" who were star worshippers centuries before the comming of Islam. The world "saabien" has been mentioned in the Quran .This region has played a very important role in the cultural ,social and political evolution in Indo-Pakistan .The first and most famous gramarian and historian of Sanskrit,Panini, belonged to Lahor,a tehsil of Swabi, then called Salatura .
This area played a very important role in the devolopment of Gandhara Art. It is said that one of the important meeting of the prominent fiqures of the Bhuddist relegion was held in Lahor ,in which it was decided that statues of their Lord Bhudda should be made in order to preserve memory of the Lord. That meeting was attended by large number of deligates from around the Bhuddist world .Upto that time ,there was no tradition of statue making among the Buddists .Consequently ,the first statue of Lord Bhudda was made in Lahor,
there-from the art of statue making spread to India ,China and South East Asia.Due to this art Gandhara became cultural center of the Bhuddist world .The World Conqurer ,Alexander the Great ,also came to Swabi and fought battles here .From Swabi he went to Taxilla by crossing Indus river near Hund, which was an important crossing point on Indus river at that time. The Noted Chineese historian and pilgrim , Huen Song, had also visited Swabi and has mentioned Slatura and Hund in his memoirs.
The famous Muslim historian "Utbi" has reffered to Hund as one of the most beautiful ,clean and suitable place of the world . It was called "Wai Hund" which means the Gate Way to India.
The twin cities of Hund and Lahor were Capital of the Hindu Shahi Kingdom in 10th century AD .Thsi kingdom spread from Afghanistan upto Dehli. The famous Kings of this Dynasty were Rajpal, Jaipal and Annandpal. This Kingdom was overthrown by "Sultan Mahmud of Ghazni" during his span of 17 invasions of India. At that time the people of Swabi and surrounding areas were Hindus. With the coming of Sultan Mahmud Islam spread in this region and the local population accepted Islam. The people were mostly of the Dallazak tribe.
The Dallazaks were displaced from Swabi by the Yousafzais in the 16th century when they migrated from Afghanistan and occupied Swat ,Bajour,Dir and Peshawar valley including Swabi .Here the Yousafzais came into close contact with the khattack tribe which ensued in a series of battles between these two tribes over land. The Khattacks occupied some lands of the yousafzais because the former had strong backing of the Mughal Goverment of India.
